IDM News: MIAMI 2006 : A LITTLE TASTE OF NEVER SHOW UP AGAIN ! by Claude Monnet
|
After Michael Fossati & Olivier Velay, now is the turn of DJ/Producer, Claude Monnet to deliver his conclusions as far as Miami 2006 is concerned…
MIAMI 2006 : A LITTLE TASTE OF NEVER SHOW UP AGAIN !
Don’t ever see anything bitter or a sort of sensationalism effect in order to catch the readers attention in the choice of this title. Nope, as what comes thereafter has to been seen as the objective feedback of what the entire house community has lived and how it has felt during those 8 days spent in Miami.
For the first time after many years attending the event, we’ve all had got this feeling that a page was on its way to be turned, leading us closer to the end than the beginning…
Despite a city of Miami full of crowd - Spring Break, Global Gathering (festival electro/rock), M3, et WMC – whereas the fact of finding a hotel room was to be compared to some olympic performance, how come haven’t we managed to feel THE vibe or simply had some pleasure like the previous years, apart from tanning ???
What might be the reasons ?
- An organization more than unacurate. As a matter of fact, the battle between M3 and WMC has reached new steps this year, creating a real confusion while having some events scheduled at a precise date being reported at another one on certain dedicated mags such as The List. For instance, the Peppermint Jam which was scheduled to happen on March 27 has been reported everywhere as due to happen the day after…
- The local clubs which used to honour the official badges while allowing the attendees to get in for free some 3 years ago don’t do it anymore while charging entry fees up to $20 for the pools &afternoon parties and $80 for the Space club whereas DJ stars such as Eric Morillo, Deep Dish, Roger Sanchez who also happen to be Ibiza summer residents where to be found…
- The local hotels and restaurants which have doubled their prices during this period within the last years…
- Let’s also mention the fact that the true clubbers – I mean the die hard fans, the connoisseurs and those who’ve got this culture in their blood – have disappeared to be replaced by a whole bunch of people who don’t give a sh.. as far as music is concerned and are much more interested in this strass & carnival effect that some promoters try to give to their events in order to hide their musical poverty !!!
This may be will explain why the mythic MAW party has taken place in front of a little 200 persons this year, meanwhile everyone was fighting at the door the years before in order to get the famous pass allowing you to get in and be given the promo bag.
Alas, the latest would be far from the exception confirming the rule, as we tend to say in France. Lots of other events have scored little success despite a hi level in terms of musical quality and line ups aptly to satisfy a lot of European promoters: Cielo (Willie Graff, Dixon, Charles Webster, Kevin Hedge, Louie Vega, DJ Pippi, Tedd Patterson, Nicolas Matar), Def Mix (David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, Larry Tee, the Misshapes Shannon, Ani Phearce, Gregg Foreman), Peppermint Jam (Mousse T, Shakedown, Matthias "Matty" Heilbronn, Syke N Sugarstarr, Ralf Gum, Mark Robinson, Virginia, Cess, Emma Lanford et Dacia Bridges), Roots (the weekly NYC residency of Louie Vega et Kevin Hedge) etc…
This said, some rendez-vous have been successful, like Club Shelter (Timmy Regisford, Quentin Harris, Sting International, Tyrone Francis, Lil Ray and Mia Friday. Byron Stingily, Monique Bingham, Colton Ford, and Ambrosia.), King Street (Doc Martin, Sunshine Jones, Dennis Ferrer, Julius Papp, Joi Cardwell, Mink, Deli G, DJ Oji, Victor Rosado, WIl Johnny Dangerous, GTS, DJ Pierre, Roy Davis Jr., Steve "Silk" Hurley, Johnny Fiasco, Lady D etc.). Or Defected at Nikki Beach which has attracted over 3,000 people from 4.00 pm til 5.00 am despite some bad forecast conditions (4 hours of non stop tropical heavy rain!!!), with an incredible line up on 3 floors (Danny Krivit, Dimitri From Paris, Martin Solveig, Bob Sinclar, Jamie Lewis, Dixon, Copyright, Simon Dunmore, Jay-J & Latrice, Andy Daniell, Sandy Rivera, Aaron Ross, Blaze, Kevin Hedge, DJ Spen, Marc Evans, Dennis Ferrer, Mr V & Alix Alvarez, Andy Ward, Barbara Tucker, Shovell, Monique Bingham and yours truly).
A success then for the British label but also as sort of tree hiding the forest (if you allow me the expression), judging by the words of CEO Simon Dunmore. WMC 2006 was another year where everybody continually complained that the conference was losing its focus and was becoming diluted by the Spring Break fraternity. The traffic and problems you had getting to meetings has made business more difficult as many meetings were missed. Sure there were some good parties….sure I heard a few new tracks and saw some old friends, but it was always so much more than that…
To conclude on a more positive note, we’d say that this year has seen a Mr V in top form, armed with a solid album made of hip hop and house awaited this Summer and sacred German twosome AME with their ‘Rej’ single but also a couple of worth the listen remixes for both Rodamaal and Derrick Carter respectively with ‘Insomnia’ and ‘Where You At’.

In Da Mix: WHO'S IN THE HOUSE?
|

Once again, House Music is to take the center stage this week here on IDMW.Com, hot on the heels of the recent Miami gathering and what has occured over there, as reported by our correspondants, letting us wondering even more about the future of the genre…
No doubt will the answer depend on who is to be considered as being a part of it or not which will vary in regards to what is perceived as being House Music or not… Better say that we’re once again confronted to that famous question as to what between the egg and the hen has appeared first! But also in the position to be taken as some self proclaimed guardians of the temple, which we do not pretend to be, no more than censors while givin’ good points to some and bad ones to others…
This said, you’ll probably agree with us when being said how today’s situation has become confused as far as house music is concerned, in the true vein of what happened to the said dance music some fifteen years ago with the progressive rejection of the phenomena as such due to the numerous deviations which have followed. The first of’em being the arrival of the so called Eurodance with the consequences that we all know…
We’re not that far away from it nowadays, as shown by the Miami festivities which, after being for a long time the exclusive home of house music, have progressively opened themselves to the different expression forms of the said electronic conceived music, while not only tryin’ to get more attention but first of all x-tra profits.
C’mon, there’s no need havin’ a Harward diploma to realize how House Music has changed since its early daze! But let’s not forget how much we’ve also changed ourselves in the meantime. Should it be in regards to our respective ages, but also our situations and expectations. And I’m not even talking about those 20 years which have passed since with, as a direct result, the arrival of successive new generations.
A quick look at the said specialized press and most notoriously their regular DJ polls is quite illustrative of the growing gap between the crowd as a whole.
This said, what happens to House Music is far from being an exception, as demonstrated by the countless disco facets back in the days, not to mention the hip hop numerous overflowings such as XXX rated stuff by the likes of 2 Live Crew or the gangsta thang, and R&B and even rock make no exception.
As a conclusion, what can obviously be said is the coexistence of two parellel although totally different universes which while living under the same banner are for much in the current confusion as far as the genre as a whole is perceived. With, on one hand, those inclined to fill the expectations of a said massive market with the consequences that such a situation suggests (absence of message when not meaning, pop references by any means necessary and the release of reputed instant consumption products). While, on the other are to be found the others, considering music as a language whereas they’ll try to express what they feel, leavin’us with the entire freedom to share it ; this, as strange as it seems, being much closer to the definition generally given as far as art is concerned. Hot on the heels of Stalwart honcho Olivier Velay, another view from another man with another perspective – the one of spiritofhouse.com supremo Michael Fossati – but the same devotion to House Music and nearly the same view as far as this Miami 2006 is concerned as shown thereafter…

IDM News: MIAMI 2006: WAS IT WORTH IT ?
|
As said earlier, time has come for our local correspondants to give us their conclusions as far as the Miami festivities are concerned. First to appear in the series is Tried & Tested new columnist and Stalwart label head Olivier Velay…
MIAMI 2006 : WAS IT WORTH IT ?
It’s that time of the year… That time we’ve all been expecting for in the industry… It’s always with great expectations that I am packing my suitcase, my head full of good music & sun… Heading to Miami in March has always been through the years such an experience. A different one each time. 8 years after my first time there, in which I had the chance to introduce FINALLY (KOT) to everyone @ WMC in 2000 (what a great experience !), here I am ready for another Conference. Miami is not only a huge opportunity to promote new records (being a producer or a label, or both), it’s also about meeting with everyone on the planet you’ve been in touch with or heard off if you work in the Dance Music scene. Exchanging music and ideas with professional passionate people from the industry is always a great experience, especiallyby the art-deco district under the sunny sky of Miami Beach…

In Da Mix: WHOSE HOUSE IS THIS?
|
Now that Miami is definitely behind with almost everyone back at their day to day life, time has now come for the mouths to spread the word as far as the whole thang is concerned. And judging by what we’ve been reported, it looks like this is far from havin’ gone for the better which, if famialiar to our Politics Of Dancing column, shouldn’t come as a surprise…
Once again, and in the true spirit of what we think to be our job as a reputed observer, we can’t hardly help ourselves going once more to the forefront while stating how what happens from a year to another looks like nothing but a collective suicide as far as the scene is concerned. And the inevitable pics of sun tanned bimbos and body builded guys partyin’ 24 hours a day displayed as illustrations of the circumstancial After Miami reports that you’ll be up to read on the usual mags won’t change an ounce of what stands as an evidence. Da whole sh** is goin’ all the way wrong while new peaks have been reached this year. And, unless there’s some drastic change to come, I hardly see the interest of considering this event as a key meeting place in the minds of a growing amount of those fully dedicated to their art, as to be further developped this week in our correspondants reports.
It obviously seems like what appears years ago in Ibiza at Summer time sadly looks like repeating itself by the sunny shores of Florida, with the inevitable promoters takin’ once again advantage of the situation while killing the spirit and the initial purpose of the event whose initial goal – should you be reminded of ? – was to give the world a display of its indeniable creativity. And God knows how we’ve ended up getting far from this…
Quite ironical I’d be tempted to say from a scene which would see the light on the famous DIY principle some 20 years ago, calling itself a Nation and makin’ its reputation on values such as love and brotherhood. But also quite cruel in the mean time seing how those faithful minds have ended up going under slavery by a whole bunch of external peeps whose goal is to make money by any means necessary. I humbly can’t help myself feeling both sad for those who deserve much more than the attention bein’ currently given to them in regards to their talents and litterally disgusted by such a mess.
I mean, whose house is this having as theirs so many people trying to take maximum profits out of it when not givin’ a single valuable thing in return???
Whose house is this makin’ noise around hype as opposed to real skills???
Whose house is this neglecting the people who support it from Jan.1st til Dec.31st meanwhile being asked to pay astromical admission fees for the sole reason that this is THE Miami thang???
Whose house is this not taking care of the very rare of those spending time (& money) to try to give it a better exposure???
Whose house is this having some of its hosts bringing us back to the shameful period of segragation while stating that it can't be otherwise than black???
Whose house is this? Surely not mine for f*** sake as I guess it’s probably the same for a vaste majority of you.
As a consequence, no wonder how/why words start being murmured here and there about the launch of an alternative by a growing amount of people thinkin’ that this house isn’t their home anymore. And I don’t see how we could blame them on such circumstances.
Of course, this is far from being the first time that we hear about such a possibility, but chances have never seemed so great to see this endly happening one day or another. And the sooner will be the best…

Politics Of Dancing: AFTER MIAMI - POLITICS OF DANCING: HOUSE WILL EAT ITSELF
|
Spare the rod and spoil the child… No doubt how this well known proverb has been for much on the launch of this now regular column named Politics Of Dancing. A column where we think like doin’ nothing but our reputed job as a said observer with the aim to contribute to a brighter future as far as the vibes that unite us here - are concerned...
Each year at the same period, the Miami festivities are the opportunity to have both an instant cliché and a wider view as far as the house scene is concerned and this year happens to be once again significant in learnings for those of us customised to look much further than the extremity of their noses…
On a strictly consumer’s perspective, no doubt how this year has reached another peak with more and more people added to the Springtime travellers and more and more events to happen on a daily basis for the greatest satisfaction of the people used to take money out of it. In other words, the organisers of the event, but first and foremost the hotels, the restaurants, the cab drivers… and, on a more specific view, the club owners and the promoters who, like in Ibiza nowadays, use to charge the clubbers from 2 to 4 times the price of usual admissions ! As a matter of fact and as pointed out by spiritofhouse.com head Michael Fossati on his Miami daily reports, a lot of events whose real goal is to promote new productions and talents have had to suffer of the progressive arrival of already installed parties considered as institutions in the cities they’re takin’ place, and one has to wonder the reason of their presence if not to make extra money on those sunny shores. On top of it then, we may also wonder the interest of going to a weekly party almost all year long then make such an investment to attend the same thing while in Miami??? And I’m not even talking about the insane amount increase of those parties with, as a direct consequence, the litteral dilution of the whole into a never ending magma whereas it becomes more and more difficult for the fans, if not the rare observers, to make an objective choice. This, in addiction to the fact that there’s not anymore a central place where people could meet each other and proceed to the exchange of material and ideas like back in the daze during the afternoons at the Fontainebleau by the pool…
Mind you, one might always say that the proper of the times is to change, but also wonder in the mean time if it’s really for the better… Then now that the extravaganza is definitely over, what again is to happen in the remaining 51 other weeks of the year?
Years are going on and on but the learnings out of this remain sadly the same. House music is progressively eating itself with an increasing amount of people centered to their sole selves as opposed to support each other inside the reputed community and, as if it wasn’t enough, less and less looks like being done for the very rare observers entirely devoted to the said cause in regards to their yearly efforts to bring the world the latest developments as far as the music they champion and their actors are concerned. As a matter of fact, the response given by Franke Estevez of Fuzion Records to what needs to evolve is quite significant of the current situation. What needs to evolve is the recognition of Dance Music, he said as a part to our Miami 06 daily features. And what I mean by that is the right source of media, exposing this market. I would like to see us on big magazines, TV, video syndication and live radio broadcast. I just feel without those essentials, it makes the market harder for us to get there. And I guess this man is totally right as I don’t see how it’s possible for any scene to survive when neglecting those resources the way house music mainly does while running like a DJ to DJ thang.
You receive what you give, says another good ol’ proverb of the likes and no wonder why, while having many of its actors neglecting the way they do the rare devoted people givin’ em support all year long, house music gets so little support as opposed to other genres such as rock, hip hop and R&B.
On a more positive side of things though, let’s point out the works of people worth the listen (and the attention) such as Steal Vybe, Wil Milton, Franke Estevez & George Mena, Jihad Muhammad Herb Martin, PirahnaHead and his Detroit collegues. They are amongst those who, while keepin’ the (good) vibe alive, enlight our hearts and souls and contribute to maintain our hope in brighter days to come. MFSB

IDM News: MIAMI – SPIRIT OF MIAMI by MICHAEL FOSSATI
|
Wednesday March 29 The day after
I guess that like many of those who’ve attended the Miami festivities, I’m glad in a sense the whole thing’s over. More and more stuff goin’ havin’ us goin’ from one place to another in Miami Beach had to come to an end with the absolute necessity to get some recovery which hopefully I did with my first 9 hours sleep in 10 days! This explaining why I'm sendin' you this ultimate daily mail so lately!!!
As I said, there was so much (too much) going on the past few days to keep track of everything. Musicwise, this seems to be a good year for Miami asthere are many hot tunes around, some of them you only will be getting as bootlegs. For instance, take "Mary Don't You Weep" by Craig Loftis that samples the same titled Aretha Franklin classic and for legal reasons cannot get a proper release , although some labels were interested in licensing it. As for the legal releases concern, there is a phat new Pirahnahead which I think you've already got infos about recently on these pages. King Street have some hot tunes on their Miami samplers, Tony Humphries has finally kicked off his Tony Records imprint, Bobby & Steve have a great soulful tune, Defected are ready to drop some bombs as well, so to be prepared for a bunch of great releases over the coming weeks and months.

Partywise, one could feel the slowdown as many peeps had already left Miami, with much fewer parties taking place and the ones I checked out not being that crowded. During daytime, I had lunch with some close friends of mine, after that I enjoyed the nice weather and had some drinks. The night started with the One Love (The Music) LA/Detroit/Chicago meet in Miami party that features an awesome live performance by Malik Alston. The next stop was the Symple Sounds meets Soul Simple party, but unfortunately there were some problems, so it never got underway as planned. Therefore, I decided to leave and went over to the United Dance Society party which featured live performances by Temple Dynasty who presented his upcoming release "Loose control" (to be released on Fuzion Records) as well as KT Brooks, also presenting his ucpoming release. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the song for the moment, but you should know what I'm talkin' about while havin' a look at Franke Estevez and George Mena's interview on these pages as well. So what to expect then? As I'm gonna be in Toronto next weekend, you gotta wait a few more days for my "Miami 2006 Mixshows" which will feature lots of fresh music, including some exclusives you won't hear anywhere else.

IDM News: MIAMI - SPIRIT OF MIAMI by MICHAEL FOSSATI
|
March 27 - The drama came to Miami
Before we talk about Monday night, we gotta take a look at some actions that occured at The 3 Chairs party the night before. I had left the place before Hanna Haïs’s live performance. Various sources reported that after her PA, a well known DJ from Chicago took the microphone and made some comments stating that this wasn’t Black music, and that this kills Black music, which brought a bad mood to the party.
Gladly, the situation could be de-escalated and the good mood came back. However this left some bad feelings among many as these statements were taken by some as racism.
Back to Monday night, the City Deep party could not start on time as there was a tree falling down that could have caused a risk to the public and needed to be removed first. As this took some time, I decided to go and take a look at the Shelter party which was taking place in two rooms at Shine (part of the "Shelbourne Ressort" hotel). While the small room was opened early, people were waiting for the opening of the big room where Timmy Regisford would play. A lot of others were also waiting outside the hotel for the party to start.
That day also had the Jamie Lewis presents Miami All Stars party taking place in the evening at the Delano Hotel, but I did leave early as the temperature went down fast and I started to freeze. After getting something to eat, I went to the Cha Cha Project party and later to the Phuture Sole & Slaag party which both suffered from the fact that there were too many events going on at the same time, including three big ones: Shelter, OM Records and Cielo. This led to a situation that these two smaller parties had not much attendance although people definitely missed the fantastic one hour long live performances by Remedy, John Pierce, Diamond Temple and Dawn Tallmann at the Phuture Sole & Slaag party which can ony be described as being off the hook and will remain among my favorite moments of this year’s Miami conference.
Back at the Miami gathering on its whole (although there are still some parties on tonight and tomorrow), the whole situation as far as all these events are concerned needs definitely a change. I mean, many DJ’s played almost every day, and their sets were mostly only one or two hours long, so what the interest??? But also I wonder about the need of regular parties being taken down to Miami such as Roots, Cielo and Shelter out of NYC. This no doubt added to the fact that there were far too many parties, meanwhile the big ones kept people from checking out things held by smaller labels and DJs and, as a result, this led to a situation where we haven’t had a single event where everybody would come as one.
Let’s hope once again that next year will bring a change for the better.

In Da Mix: (BACK TO LIFE) BACK TO REALITY
|
So we’ve all finally done IT once again!
Always sort of bizarre to wake up one day then telling yourself that there will be no tomorrow as far as a period such as the one we’ve been livin’ for almost 10 days is over. You sort of feel like an impression of coma, being taken from a non-stop boiling frenziness to a land of almost nuttin’ the minute after… That’s about how one usually feels when on its way back from Miami and, believe it or not, that’s about the same for us here on the other side of your screens after so many hours spent to be right on time in regards to our series of Florida daily deadlines…
We would like first to thank those who’ve actively helped us doin’ our job, should it be in Miami while welcoming the members of our team, incl. the M3 Summit people for havin’ us once again amongst their press partners. But also those who’ve accepted to take some of their precious time answerin’ our Q’s. Not to mention, on a more internal side, IDMW.Com technical guru Jean-Jérôme Lebel who, despite havin’ recently relocated to another area, has found the time to give the necessary help.
As a result and a direct consequence, things are to be much slower this week here on IDMW.Com apart from the expected after Miami reviews from our local correspondants. This said, you’re left with quite a lot to read, beginning with all those interviews we’ve put out as a part of our coverage of the Miami festivities, from bouncefm.com head Muema to Wil Milton, Steal Vybe, Ron Trent, King Street CEO Hisa Ishioka, RaShaan Houston, Jon Cutler, Kenny Carpenter and Fuzion Records pair Franke Estevez & George Mena in addiction to that long chat we’ve managed to have with disco supremo Patrick Adams…
MUEMA: also known under the BigHaus guise on many dedicated forums as well as the head of bouncefm.com, a space standing as one of the most serious and respected platforms in the world as far as (true) house is concerned...
WIL MILTON: from Wave Music to West End and more recently King Street, multi talented NYC DJ/producer Wil Milton of Blakink Productions has delivered some of the most beautiful pieces of music over the last years
STEAL VYBE: Re-designing the groove with their magic fingers, Chris ‘Cee Rule’ Forman and Damon ‘Mr Dizzy Fingers’ Bennett count amongst the most creative forces which have emerged along the last months. Check’em out!
RON TRENT: Relocated to his Chicago hometown, the future of the Africa Hi Fi resident has never looked so bright with a whole bunch a new projects awaited to see the day.
KING STREET: Entering its 14th year of activities makes this NYC house label the longest running of the likes. Quick reminder with CEO Hisa Ishioka.
RASHAAN HOUSTON: The former Pound Boys singer proves how he can make it on his own with a couple of boiling hot cuts ready to rock the floor…
JON CUTLER: The typical history of a man who, despite having known a period of doubt, has, unlike many of his pairs, remained true to who he is.
KENNY CARPENTER: 30 years of continuous activities and the beat goes on for this NY DJ/producer responsible of a killer tune soon to be released on Slaag Records.
FRANKE ESTEVEZ & GEORGE MENA: Together as one, those two NJ producers who’ve given birth to the Fuzion label look like unstoppable…
PATRICK ADAMS: Responsible of some of the much sought after tunes 30 years after their initial release, Patrick Adams is considered as the uncrowned king of disco. Full story
Time now to get some slight & necessary recovery. From everyone here on IDMW.Com, thank you for your continuous visits,
Frederic ‘MFSB’ Messent, editor

IDM News: MIAMI - SPIRIT OF MIAMI by MICHAEL FOSSATI
|
March 26 - the day I needed some rest....
After the previous days have been pretty hectic with meeting lots of people and checking out various parties, I decided to take a rest and relax on Sunday. This was definitely necessary as my body was hardly paying the price for lots of walking, sun and drinks - but there was not enough sleep to compensate all of that anyway !.
The first thing I checked out was the Sunday Soulful Soiree where I knocked my knee on a table as it was almost dark in the club. Later on, I went to the Deep Gets Salted party which took place at the outdoor "Opium Garden". As it was a sunny day, it was a real delight hanging out there and enjoy the music. Later in the evening, that party got packed and people got excited about the music.
The night started with a visit at The 3 Chairs party starring Theo Parrish & Moodymann where deep Detroit sounds were naturally displayed, this being a welcome difference as compared to the sounds I checked out in the days and nights before. The "Ain't Nothin' But A House Party" closed down the night with two rooms that saw people dancing to the grooves of the DJs.
This Monday will kick off slowly but hit hard in the evening and night with many parties taking place... with my body still suffering from the previous days. It firmly looks like Tuesday will be another day to just hang around and enjoy Miami (remember there is something going on called "Spring Break"...).
