Politics Of Dancing: THE POLITICS OF DANCING: BE YOURSELF!

The Politics Of Dancing

Funny how music can be linked to so many things in life, such as feelings like love, hate, desire, passion, disturbance, repulsion, but also women, cooking (many of those who are... in the mix should know what I’m talkin’ about), photography, architecture, not to mention writing amongst stuff comin’ to my mind at this precise moment. And when I’m talkin’ about the latest, I mean the way we come to learn how to write. You first would discover it typographically speakin’, then reproduce it and approriate it for yourself. This is the typical schema of the so called experience – differently said: the background – which you get in almost every aspect of life, but at least do you need someone who’ll get you into it. This might be a teacher, some older peeps, a mentor, a spiritual guide or a prescriptor. Name it whoever you want... In other words what I’d be tempted to call A reference. Someone who you tend to recognize yo’self in without necessarily knowing the exact reasons, I should say, except the fact that he or she’s feeding your appetite if not generating it. Those peeps we refer to have no doubt a special dimension for each of us, because of that specific link we feel like having with them. Luckily enuff, I met them at an early age, so that I guess my internal construction’s been made easier, meanwhile I would be given a method...

On most cases, what we had to do was simply taking notice of the credits on the record sleeves and/or labels at this early time. I mean everyone around looked like havin’ understood the absolute necessity of being identifiable as opposed to nowadays having us mainly surrounded by a magma of lookalike stuff. From the producers to the musicians, from the record companies which truly acted like labels to the club owners/promoters who would do everything to make  their spaces unique. Not to mention the radio stations which would base their reputations and subsequently their audiences on real individualities at the time. Was it because we all sort of were in a discovering process at the period? Could it be that my interrogations of the likes are nuttin’ else but generational at the end of the day? Dis I can’t really say but if there’s anything to be taken for sure, it’s the diversity – so the choice – which, ironically, was much more around than today despite the existence of far more performant reputedly ways of communication.

So many people would get their names in the History while being simply left the opportunity to be themselves as opposed to the numerous pre-marketed concepts currently competing for leadership in the charts nowadays! And the result aptly speaks for itself, as shown by the enormous difference of record sales from a period to another ; the first reason leading us back to the undeniable existence of identity back in the daze. I mean: once again, everything would be made to have us a clear idea of what we were fronted with. Motown was Motown, Salsoul was Salsoul, Prelude was Prelude and this applied to almost everything around, from the Paradise Garage to the Palace in Paris to name the most well known, but also a big majority of those places which remained anonymous on a worldwide scale including in France where many of the 70’s DJ’s were real die hard music lovers as opposed to radio Top 30 followers. And I guess the same ought to be said presswise with reviewers acting like prescriptors as opposed to trend/buzz reporters as well as on radio stations with real broadcasters as opposed to pre-programmed driven jocks. This, no doubt, being (also) for much in the big differences between those distinct periods... MFSB
