Cee ElAssaad – Mahboubti (Original Casbah Mix)

First Listen: Cee ElAssaad – Mahboubti (Original Casbah Mix) (Sunclock Music)

‘Mahboubti…’ A title that makes no (real) mystery about its origins. Although and like on too much music reputedly comin’ from the underground, its the infos which are cruelly missing…

No matter what though! As the transport of the heart, body and soul remains nothing but the proper of music at the end. With its definition varying upon the ingredients we’re getting into it. And God knows how Morroco has built itself a solid reputation. This as one of the key places in the world in terms of blend. From the material used on its local architecture to the extreme subtlety of its gastronomy. Meanwhile, I’d be tempted to say it’s pretty much what we get while givin’ a listen to ‘Mahboubti’. Even though I wish I would have found a proper translation of this word for a better standing.

Hailing from the capital of the country (Casablanca), Cee ElAssaad invites us to a fascinating trip. This while fusing Morrocan chants and traditional instruments over a House rhythm pattern. Eventually bringing us back to the souvenir of boiling experiences from the past. And, by that, I’m thinkin’ of artists such as Rachid Taha, Cheb Khaled or Natasha Atlas. If not the late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan from Pakistan. Not to mention the 90’s British Asian scene with Nitin Sawhney, State Of Bengal or Talvin Singh to name but a few…

Originally rated as Afro House, ‘Mahboubti’ stands as another brilliant representation of… World Music. Don’t you think?

A seasoned music lover, Casablanca native Chouiab ElAssaad is one of the most influent DJ’s/Producers in the local House scene. Havin’ played alongside a cohort of big names. From Boddhi Satva to DJ Rocco, Osunlade and Louie Vega among others. With countless labels welcoming his releases. From Tribe Records to Offering Recordings. But also Peng Africa and Open Bar Music to name a few.

As a matter of fact Cee ElAssaad has established himself among those who have a signature. Delivering gems such as ‘Dream’ along with Ama Chandra. And this with remixing work courtesy of DJ Spinna. But also ‘Mahboubti’ with alternative remix by the likes of Jose Marquez. And what about ‘Get On Your Feet’ along with Idris Muhammad‘s bass player Tarus Martin? Or ‘Arabic Bird’ which saw him sharing the bill with with M.Caporale?!?

Cee ElAssaad has given an interesting update of Ananda Project‘s I Hear You Dreaming’. Then he more recently came up with ‘Sacred Chant’ as remixed by DJ Rocco. This in addition to his retouch of ‘Surrender’ for Ian Friday featuring Kelli Sae.
