Heatwave – Boogie Nights (Epic)

Classics: Heatwave – Boogie Nights (Epic)

“(Boogie nights, boogie nights). (Boogie nights) ain’t no doubt we are here to party, (Boogie nights) come on now got to get it started…”

“We are the results of history”, said to me one day House singer and long time friend Ce Ce Rogers. Meanwhile explaining that the Northern American architecture would probably have been way different. This if the Frenchies or the Italians had invaded the country as opposed to the Brits.
A statement which pretty much illustrates the constitution of Heatwave as a matter of fact. A British-based international band which united artists comin’ from the USA, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, England and Jamaica. But also their saga. From the way lead singer Johnny Wilder, Jr. got to work with songwriter Rod Temperton. Himself later reknown for his collabs with luminaries such as Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and James Ingram among others. To their progressive end on the heels of a car crash which would get Wilder paralyzed from the neck down in February 1979. Even though he kept on working with the group after he got back home from hospital.

The third single from their debut-album – ‘Too Hot To Handle’ – released back in 1976, ‘Boogie Nights’ stands among their biggest classics. This in addition to ‘Always And Forever’, ‘The Groove Line’ and ‘Gangsters Of The Groove’ in 1982.

Besides, hard not to see some connection between Heatwave‘s ‘Boogie Nights’ and Michael Jackson‘s ‘Off The Wall’ which Temperton also happened to write three years after.

Johnny Wilder sadly passed during in his sleep on May 13, 2006 at his home in Dayton, OH, aged 56. With the cause of his death remaining unknown.
