Hifi Sean feat. Paris Grey – Lost Without U

Single Of The Week: Hifi Sean feat. Paris Grey – Lost Without U (Extended) (Glitterbox)

Last week saw us pretty much enthuzing about The Shapeshifterscover version of Sharon Redd‘s ‘Try My Love On For Size’. With the same applying this week to Hifi Sean‘s ‘Lost Without U’ along with Paris Grey, also on Glitterbox.

For the ones of you who might be wondering, unlike other sites here or there, we don’t get any commission to do reviews. Besides, we never did so and will never do. Only guided by what we think to be the best and the pleasure to share it with you. And the fact is that whenever comin’ to give a listen to ‘Lost Without U’, you know/feel as to how you’re in front of something special.

How to not feel the influences of Disco and eventually (soulful) House which Sean Dickson (Hifi Sean) has obviously been exposed to during his long stay in the Big Apple? The man crafting a catchy and friendly environment with sexy strings and lush keys over a rumblin’ bass-driven rhythm pattern. Itself comin’ up as the perfect surroundings for Inner City‘s instantly recognizable Paris Grey‘s vocal performance. With ‘Lost Without U’ pretty much comin’ up as an Indian Summer anthem…

The least one can say about Sean Dickson (Hifi Sean) is that the man has come a long way. And this in a rare manner at the end. A native of Bellshill, a suburb of Motherwell, he spent quite some time in New York City. This before recently relocating to London. A member of Scottish alternative Rock band The Soup Dragons by the second half of the 80’s, he now flirts with House vibes as Hifi Sean. Once a married man with a daughter back in the day, he came to experience some unhappiness until finally admiting to himself he was gay. Eventually divorcing then meeting later on the one who would become his husband…

“I was consumed with guilt because I’d hurt people I loved”, he said to The Guardian back in April 2017. “I cut friends off because I assumed everyone blamed me. Then I stopped doing music. For two years I lived in a fire-damaged council flat, not fixing anything up… Then eventually I had a breakdown.”

Needless to say as to how fear was just around when Dickson resurfaced as Hifi Sean. And this despite the fact he’d done a bunch of remixes under his new guise inbetween. “I’d not made music for nearly 15 years”, he eplained., “And I was terrified about it!”. Meanwhile the gap happened to be so big with his previous works. As brilliantly illustrated by the stellar ‘Testify’ along with Crystal Waters with remix courtesy of Opolopo. One of the highlights of his 2016 ‘Ft.’ debut-album. An effort that saw him jammin’ along with a cohort of luminaries. From Bootsy Collins to Yoko Ono and Billie Ray Martin. But also Inner City‘s voice Paris Grey on ‘Lost Without U’. Not to mention Alan Vega who sadly passed the very week that ‘Ft.’ went into production.

‘Ft.’ eventually went into a new life the year after. This under the form of a remix album by the likes of ‘Ft. Excursions’. With the same applying to ‘Lost Without U’ in 2018, with its recent re-release on Gliiterbox…

This year 2018 also seeing him not only remixing Vanessa Daou‘s ‘Becoming a Nun 2.0’. But also retouching Wally Jump Jr. & The Criminal Element‘s ‘Just Can’t Stop’. And eventually share the bill with Celeda on ‘The Music’ among others.
