Jackie Moore – This Time Baby

Classics: Jackie Moore – This Time Baby (Columbia)

To be honest, ‘This Time Baby’ didn’t get much of attention when first released as a part of The O’Jays ‘So Full Of Love’ album back in 1978. Probably because of being overshadowed by ‘Used Ta be My Girl’. And if not, because PIR didn’t manage to release it as a single.
It would nevertheless get to recognition the year after, opening Jackie Moore‘s debut-LP – ‘I’m On My Way’ – for Columbia…

With thanks to John Luongo and Michael Barbieri who mixed it… It had all the ingredients to turn it into a best seller the year after. From the lady’s outstanding voice, somehow reminding of Candi Staton. To its concept, built on a killer bassline. Not to mention the presence of Don Renaldo And The Philadelphia Horns And Strings. It more or less appeared like a Philly Sound gem tailored for the dancefloors.

Born in Jacksonville, FL, Jackie Moore scored initial success in the early 80’s successively with ‘Dear John’ and ‘Precious Precious’. With the latter considered as her signature song. She eventually made some extra noise a couple of years later with the Phil Hurt and Bunny Sigler produced ‘Sweet Charlie Baby’. Meanwhile she would get her highest ranking in the US R&B chart with ‘Make Me Feel Like A Woman’ (#6 position) in 1975.

Moving to Columbia 4 years later, she scored her biggest commercial success with ‘This Time Baby’. A cover of a song by The O’Jays from their 1978 album ‘So Full Of Love’, penned by Leroy Bell and Casey Jones.
Produced by Bobby Eli, it received the mixing treatment by the likes of John Luongo and Michael Barbieri. Its rumbling bassline and horn parts giving it a more energetic feel. Meanwhile enhancing the impact of its lyrical content.

‘This Time Baby’ most likely stands as a blast from the past. Freemasons sampled it back in 2005 on ‘Love On My Mind’ featuring Amanda Wilson. And British producer David Anthony gave it a cover version as led by Lisa Millett on his recently released ‘Emotive’ album…
