Jimmy Gallagher & Soul City Orchestra – Play To Win

First Listen: Jimmy Gallagher & Soul City Orchestra – Play To Win (Nigel Lowis Mix) (DSG Music)

On the heels of their ‘Disco, Soul Gold’ compilation beatiully summin’ up their activities since their launch date, DSG Music opening their 2018 in a blowing Disco Jazz/Funk way. Meanwhile welcoming saxophone player Jimmy Gallagher‘s ‘Play To Win’. With this being his second offshot as an artist as a matter of fact…

Rather sayin’ it like this, ‘Play To Win’ just says it all in itself. Bringin’ us back to the souvenir of those killer instrumentals that paved the way of the Disco period. From Ashford & Simpson‘s ‘Bourgie Bourgie’ to Funk Fusion Band‘s ‘Can You Feel It’. Not to mention The Salsoul Orchestra‘s cover version of Earth, Wind & Fire‘s ‘Getaway’. Or MFSB‘s ‘Kay-Jee’…

Comin’ up with mixing work courtesy of in-house producer Nigel Lowis… ‘Play To Win’ most likely sounds like a Jazz funktified echo to the Philadelphia Sound. Don’t you think?

A native of Glasgow, Jimmy Gallagher followed the cursus of a regular student. Finishin’ it up back in 1984 at Our Lady’s High School. Meanwhile getting into learnin’ saxophone by the age of 10. Two years later, Gallagher decided it was time for him to go to London. Jammin’ with various local bands led him to a session career. Collaborating with Bros. on 3 tracks including ‘Push’. Then with Eternal (‘I’ll Be There’) and Dina Carroll (‘So Close’). With this getting him to work along with producer Nigel Lowis. Not to mention London Beat or Guru Josh among other luminaries he’d worked with. Then Ola Onabule on his 1995 ‘More Soul Than Sense’) album.

Most definitely a globe trotter, Jimmy relocated to Germany for some time by the send of the 90’s. Eventually contributing to Söhne Mannheim‘s ‘Zion’ debut-album back in 2000. This before movin’ to Spain then France and back to Spain where he’s currently residing.
