First Listen: Jon Cutler & E-Man – The Statement (The Black 80’s Mix) (Distant Music)
From the very first note, you can tell. You can tell you’re on a deepnotic journey along with The Black 80’s syncopated remix of Jon Cutler and E-Man‘s ‘The Statement’. From E-Man‘s magnetic spoken word swingalong performance. To the stellar keys. Not to mention the rumblin’ bassline.

– Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, Jon Cutler has lived all his life in the Big Apple. His dedication to music started during his teenage years with his first DJing activities at local House parties. Studying photography at the School of Visual Arts, he nevertheless decided to return to (House) music full-time. Launching his own label – Distant Music – back in 1996. And eventually setting up his HQ next door to Easy Street.
From then, he released gems from artists such as Mateo & Matos, DJ Romain, Johnny Fiasco and K.O.T. among others. Not to mention DJ Jorj with the memorable ‘Only You’ with remixes courtesy of Blaze back in 2002. Meanwhile he delivered the classics ‘You Groove Me’ and ‘It’s Yours’, respectively with Kemdi and E-Man in 2001.
– Hollis P Monroe is responsible for classic songs in both the Deep House and Funky Breaks genres. Since 1994, he has made sporadic but significant musical contributions on highly respected labels. From Ovum to Defected, West End, Soul Candi, and Jive Electro to name a few.
Hollis made a return under the spotlight back in 2012 with the remixes of his classic ‘I’m Lonely’ on Noir Music. But also sort of found a new youth while teamin’ up with talented music veteran but newcomer to House Music, Overnite. The latter bringing his vast experience as a vocalist and producer into the musical direction, DJ sets, and live performances of The Black 80’s.
Sometimes billed as Monroe & Overnite, The Black 80’s have already made a big impression on the House community. Dropping their music on labels such as on Freerange, Compost Black Label, air london and N A U. As well as delivering stand-out collaborations with Rampa, KiNK & Sierra Sam, Nhan Solo and Marc DePulse.
