Keith Sweat – I Want Her (Vintertainment/Elektra)

Classics: Keith Sweat – I Want Her (Vintertainment/Elektra)

“You turn me on and on. This feeling, girl, is so strong. My heart, girl, is on fire. Ooh, you’re my desire. I’ve got a thing for you. Dreams of you and me, baby. She’s bad, she’s bad, she’s bad. All I know is I want her (I want, I want, I want, I want, I want her). I want her (Don’t misunderstand me)…”

As a matter of fact, ‘I Want Her’ happened to be pivotal in many ways. First, as marking the solo debut of Keith Sweat, a member of Harlem band Jamilah back in the 70’s. And, in the meantime, the nephew of Disco producer Keith ‘Sabu’ Crier. Second, as bringin’ him to top the Billboard Hot R&B chart. Third, as inaugurating the New Jack Swing era, with co-writing and production work by the likes of Teddy Riley. Then, last but not least, as sort of opening the path, although in a mild way, to a series of sexplicit themes that would soon after follow. This by the likes of R. Kelly and Jodeci (‘Freek’N You’) among others.

The first single from the Keith Sweat‘s 1987 ‘Make It Last Forever’ album, the bumpin’ ‘I Want Her’ is one of its highlights. This with other unmissable goodies such as ‘Don’t Stop Your Love’ and ‘Something Just Ain’t Right’.

‘I Want Her’ eventually started an impressive series of successes for the one also remembered as one third of LSG. Thus sharing the bill with the late Gerald Levert and Johnny Gil

‘I Want Her’ also features on the first volume of my ‘New Jack Story’ compilations released on Warner back in 1995
