Mateo & Matos – Mixed Moods (Extended Mix)

Lost but not least! Mateo & Matos – Mixed Moods (Extended Mix) (Spiritual Life)

Obviously influenced by Disco (like Johnny D & Nicky P), Mateo & Matos embraced a way wider scope at the end. Dealing with infectious soulful House vibes. But also venturing on deeper territories such as on ‘Mixed Moods’ on Joe Claussell‘s Spritual Life label.

‘Mixed Moods’ just has a title that speaks for itself. Sounding like a hypnotic introspection with thanks to an infectious jazzy synth chord progression over a smooth phonky driven rhythm part. Therefore bringing back to the souvenir of both Santana‘s ‘Abraxas’ (and more precisely ‘Singing Winds’) and Candido‘s ‘Thousand Finger Man’.
Quite illustrative of the label’s sound as a matter of fact…

John “Roc” Mateo and Eddie “E-Z” Matos both found their influences in the late 70’s Disco. John Mateo started by broadcasting sets over his CB radio in 1985. It was through this self-produced show that Eddie Matos first made contact with him. They became friends and shortly afterward joined forces. Listening to Larry Levan, Tony Humphries, Shep Pettibone and Little Louie Vega, they got introduced to the latter. Learning about studio production and engineering from him, they started working on their own music.

In the footsteps of these famous US productions pairs from Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards (Chic) to Louie Vega and Kenny Dope (Masters At Work). They had much in common with Johnny D and Nicky P. Eventually releasing their most Disco flavored productions on their Henry Street label.

The twosome explored different facets though, collaborating with labels such as Nite Grooves or Glasgow Underground. But also Large coming up there with the essential ‘Celebrate Life’ and ‘Joy 2 My Life’ in 2000 and 2002. Meanwhile, they ventured into deeper territories on Joe Claussell‘s Spiritual Life imprint. Beginning with the deep and jazzy ‘Mixed Moods’. A groovy and atmospheric gem which found extra exposure soon after on the ‘Spiritual Life Music’ comp on UK label Nuphonic.

Mateo & Matos released a total of 5 albums. With 4 of them on Glasgow Underground and their last – ‘Essential Elements’ – back in 2004 on King Street.
