Tennerz: Mike City – My Weakness (Libation Main Vocal Mix) (Global Soul Music)
“My Weakness is… her!” Here we go with a beautiful ode to the beloved. Just the way the late Barry White did back in the day with the memorable ‘Your Sweetness Is My Weakness’. Besides, havin’ a look at the name Ian Friday chose for his label, tells everything about this piece of music.
Of course, one would most likely rate it as soulful House Music at first sight. But it goes way more than that. I would rather consider as an illustration of… Global Soul. In other words, a piece of Soul to which Ian Friday has given a jazzy Dance contemporary feel…
“My Weakness is her”, sings Mike City in quite a contagious way. Let’s see if ever this cut might become one of yours this Summer…

– Philadelphia, PA native Michael Flowers first came to fame back in 1999. This while writing and producing ‘I Wish’ for Carl Thomas. Suggested to collaborate with Sunshine Anderson by a friend of his who’d heard her singing in the cafeteria line at North Carolina Central University, he became her mentor. Eventually co-writing and producing the memorable ‘Heard It All Before’ for her 2 years later.
A quick check at the man’s discography brings the opportunity to realize the consistancy of his contribution since the early 90’s. Working with an impressive array of luminaries. From Usher, Bilal and Nate Dogg. To Brandy, Dwele, Rihanna and Gerald Levert to name a (very) few. Meanwhile he would keep on ear on the House Music production. Eventually becoming a die hard fan of Ten City that would get him to change his moniker as a wink to them.
Surprisingly enough, he only released one album – ‘City Limits’ back in 1998 – as an artist during all these years. Resurfacing in the mid 2010’s while sharing the duties with producers such as Mark Francis (‘I Need Your Love’) and Booker T. But also Adam Rios (‘We Keep Going’), Ian Friday and Sean McCabe. Not to mention Earl Tutu & John Khan (‘Everybody Needs Somebody’, ‘Lately We’). And The Lounge Lizards (‘She’s The One’) more recently. With the good news being Mike is on his way to release ‘The Feel Good Agenda’ on BBE. An album – his second – that boasts cameo appearances from artists such as Lalah Hathaway, Dwele (on ‘I Rock Wit U’), Carl Thomas and Junior. And, last but not least, Faith Evans on its first offshot – ‘When I Luv’ – with remixing work courtesy of Kenny Dope.
– Armed with a passion for the arts, Ian Friday is on a creative mission. This New Yorker has been seen on stage and film and has performed throughout the Big Apple as a poet.
In 1994, he founded a nonprofit arts organization – the Tea Party – which provided a platform for upcoming and established artists. Among them, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Sandra St. Victor, The Antibalas and the Last Poets to name a few. The Tea Party also featured one of the hottest and well respected open mics in NYC as well as a party with Ian at the deejay helm.
Ian has spread his wings into the arena of music. He has worked closely with Blaze, remixing their song ‘We Are One’ on King Street Records. He eventually produced their first CD Mix – ‘The Found Love Mix CD’ – on West End Records. Makin’ his debut soon after on the label with ‘The Island Life EP’ which features the now classic ‘Carib’s Leap’.
Ian started Tea Party Music back in 2006 to present quality global soul music. Eventually winning the Choice Award for ‘Best Emerging Talent’ by the end of that year.
The first release on his label, – ‘Life Starts Today’ (Byron Moore) received astonishing support from all the major soulful deejays. This tune has become a staple in the sets of jocks such as Timmy Regisford, Louie Vega, Osunlade, Danny Krivit and Joe Clausell among others. The second release – ‘Everything’ (Ian Friday featuring Erro) meeting similar enthusiasm. Meanwhile Anto Vitale‘s ‘Theorema Del Faya”(Tea Party Vocal) stands as one of the hits of the 2007 Winter Music Conference. The latter comin’ up for a brand new round recently with 10th Anniversary Mixes courtesy of Jose Carretas and Friday.
As many cuts which heavily contributed establishing Ian Friday as a driving force to count with. Besides, how to not think of DJ Tikyo feat. Andrea Love‘s ‘Love Will Bring Us Back’. An uplifting and vibrant gem which he transformed into an absolute masterpiece back in 2013. This in addition to more recent gems such as Maritri‘s ‘Angel In Disguise’ or Kenny Bobien‘s ‘Special Day’. But also Tracy Brathwaite‘s ‘Be My Love’. Not to mention Steal Vybe feat. Byron Moore‘s ‘Live Your Life Today’ and Mike City‘s ‘My Weakness’.
With good music around, the deejay side of Ian Friday has prgressively established itself at major clubs in NYC and around the world. He has played several times at Louie Vega and Kevin Hedge‘s weekly Roots party at Club Cielo. Ian has also done several guest spots at Timmy Regisford‘s legendary ‘Shelter’ party. Meanwhile, he soon after launched a monthly event – Libation – at The Sapphire Lounge. A party which has featured many visual artists musicians and guest deejays.
In addition to this Mr. Friday’s dance mixes have aired on many local radios such as WRKS (Kiss Club Classics), WBAI (The Liquid Sound Lounge), WNYC (The Candy Shop) and CyberJamz Radio.
More recently (back in 2015) Ian gave birth to another label by the likes of Global Soul Music.
