N.W.A. – Express Yourself (Ruthless)

Classics: N.W.A. – Express Yourself (Ruthless)

Express yourself… God knows as to how music has always been a fertile ground to do so. From Blues to Soul. Not to mention Hip-Hop. And this more precisely after Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five got Rap Music from its native ground – the house parties – to the social platforms with ‘The Message’. N.W.A.‘s own ‘Express Yourself’ dealing with the matter of free expression. And more precisely the difficulties that rappers have to face with radio censorship.

The existence of Eazy-E – he died at the age of 31, meanwhile one remembers him as the Godfather of Gangsta Rap – is pretty much illustrative of the way of life being the one of a certain kind of population in Compton, CA. A neighborhood that has sadly come to (international) fame for gang activity and crime.

As a result, he acted as a drug dealer. This until the mid-80’s and the murder of his cousin before investing into Hip-Hop. Thus launching Ruthless Records which would become N.W.A.‘s home. A band that regrouped Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. Then MC Ren, DJ Yella and Arabian Prince later on.

Hitting the streets back in 1988, Eazy E‘s debut-album – ‘Eazy-Duz-It’, with production work by the likes of Dr. Dre and DJ Yella got labeled as West Coast Hip-Hop / Gangsta Rap. Eventually paving the way for N.W.A.‘s most controversial ‘Straight Outta Compton’. An album which features cuts such as the title track, ‘Fuck Tha Police’ and ‘Express Yourself’.
From then, everything would go into disputes between the various members of the group. Thus resulting in regular changes of line-up along with time.

Wright sadly died of complications of AIDS on March 26, 1995. Ten days after announcing his illness in a public statement. And one month after his admission to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. This for what one initially thought to be asthma.
