Side Effect – Always There (Fantasy)

Most Wanted! Side Effect – Always There (Fantasy)

There was Ronnie Laws, then Willie Bobo releasing this. There would also be Side Effect around the same period, although adding vocals to it. With thanks to songwriter Paul B Allen III.

These artists all happened to have an extra common point. Their producer – Wayne Henderson – who would also manage to get Side Effect a recording deal with Fantasy Records. With vocals now added to it, that classic made quite a significant impact in the NYC club scene. Although it remained a minor hit for the band.
Outstandingly led by singer Helen Lowe (later known as Helen Baylor), it got greater recognition 15 years after, as sung by Jocelyn Brown along with Incognito.

That sudden popularity pushed a lot of music lovers to dig into the roots of music. Therefore making of this version a quite sought after gem on the second hand market.

Always there… whoever this is!

Augie Johnson, Lometta Johnson, Jim Gilstrap, Gregory Matta and Louis Patton formed Side Effect in Los Angeles, CA by the middle of 1972. The band played an earthy mix of Soul, Funk and Jazz in local clubs before releasing their first album. They most likely would have to wait a couple of years to get wider recognition. The latter coming with the release of ‘What You Need’, their already second album on Fantasy Records which featured their cover version of ‘Always There’. This period also coincided with the arrival of Helen Baylor as the lead singer of the band.

Despite 9 albums to their credit, Side Effect never managed to reach the upper heights though. The group nevertheless did a lot of backing work for artists such as Roy Ayers, Billy Cobham and Stanley Turrentine. Not to mention Augie Johnson‘s other projects begginig with The L.A. Boppers.
