Single Of The week: SouLutions – Listen (Drizabone Remix) (DSG Music)
We said it at first listen when we got the original version next to our door. There’s something of Lisa Stansfield feel dubbed with Drizabone. And it’s even more obvious on this remix of the already classic ‘Listen’. With the story of this Newcastle pair seeming like a fairy tale coming true. Coming from the addition of real talents. But also the strong beliefs of label manager Gary Van den Bussche in their potential.
This is nothing but top quality music. In the tradition of what made Brit-Soul so apart 20 years ago, with lush arrangements on a smooth and friendly dance feel. So… listen and just let us know how you feel…
SouLutions are a singer-songwriting duo comprising of Louise Mehan and Steve Lee. Louise hails from the East End of Newcastle. She grew up in the family home listening to the sounds of Soul, particularly from the 70’s era. She could sing before she could talk and was expected to sing at any and every family gathering. In her late teens, she began to work the local pubs and clubs of the North East. Eventually winning local song contests and building up a reputation as a young Aretha Franklin. Most likely sounding like when the latter first signed to Columbia.
At the age of 17 she went along with her father to a gig at a local club. Louise wasn’t too happy but went along to keep her dad sweet. He told her that there was a band he wanted her to see called the Soul Messengers. A trio who were big in the North East, in the main for their tight soul harmonies and slick dance routines. The leader of the Soul Messengers was Steve Lee.
Louise‘s dad introduced them to each other, describing her as an amazing Soul singer. Steve invited Louise on stage to sing with the Messengers and she blew the place apart. 12 months later, Steve invited Louise to be a backing singer in a project that he was putting together. However, her talent was such that it wasn’t too long before she was sharing the lead vocal with Steve.
Steve hails from the West End of Gateshead. He also happened to be raised listening to Soul Music. An established Latin percussionist and vocalist, he has supported countless artists. From Joe Cocker to Jimmy James and The Vagabonds. But also Ian Dury and The Blockheads and Paul Young. Not to mention Shakatak and Johnny Guitar Watson to name a few.
SouLutions came straight to fame with ‘Listen’. Their debut-single, back in 2014, which opened indie label DSG Music’s account in the meantime. Eventually receiving some remixing work courtesy of Drizabone. Meanwhile, its flipside – ‘Mr Sun Don’t You Hide’ – reached further heights, as remixed by Ray Hayden. And how to not think of the brilliant ‘Philly Line’ completing their list on DSG Music?!?
The Newcastle pair soon after decided to go their own way though. Releasing their debut-album – ‘Destiny’ – the year after on One World Records. Extending their fame with gems such as ‘All Your Love’ from the same package. But also the blowing ‘I Got To Party’ back in 2016. More recently, they released ‘Thankful’ as an appetizer of their upcoming album. With more info from their site here.
