Technology: I think therefore I follow?!?

“I think therefore I follow…” Not exactly what one might expect to read. But more something that should normally be like “I think, therefore I am.” With the latter comin’ from René Descartes‘s Latin philosophical proposition “Cogito ergo sum”, as a matter of fact. “I think therefore I follow…” Not really how we’re supposed to behave. Although something that more and more of us tend to do at the end…

I think therefore I followI had a chat with a long time friend of my dad a few days ago. Speakin’ of our environment – he also happens to occasionally surf on Internet – he came with some interesting development. Sayin’ we all ended up being “gafams”. To which I couldn’t help myself askin’ him to say it again. He said “GAFAM” for “Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft”. Which tells a lot as to how this reputedly wise man sees what have become our immediate surroundings. Under the domination of an ever more demanding technology.
Something to which, as a web editor, I couldn’t help myself neither but fully subscribe to…

Are we tech addicts or tech dependents? One might read here or there. I’m not even sure I could ever respond to this. Simply because of the formulation of this question which supposes we’re in the position of the victim. But who, if not us by our acceptance which may have become a sort of resilience nowadays, have let such a situation happening? So ironical seeing more and more of us complaining about some ongoing awkwardness, knowing we let these changes one by one modifying our daily lives. When not extracting us from reality!

I think therefore I follow?!? That’s pretty much what a big majority of us happened to do since so many years now. Under a real excitement at the beginning while exposed to so many things destined to make our lives easier. Then the excitement more or less made room for an undeniable form of self indulgence. With the main questions nowadays being how far this can go and does this make our lives any better at the end???

Of course and as often said on these shores, technology has allowed us to do things that were impossible not so long ago. But at which price? Not to mention the resolution of its counterpart. In other words, who are the ones who take the greatest benefit from such a situation…

Now you tell me if you never experienced one of the few things thereafter. Like go to a restaurant with friends of yours and see their attention caught up by what’s happening on some wide screen TV in the background. Or see a group of people in the streets unable to have a real conv with each other because of chasing their latest messages on their tablets. And I’m not even talkin’ of people subscribing to dating sites in order to meet their alter egos!!! Now you tell me if you’ve never felt like taken away from what’s supposed to be normal life…

Can we still say “Cogito ergo sum” (“I think, therefore I am”)? Now you tell me, with your experience more than welcome…
