First Listen: Those Boys – Titled Love (Doug Gomez Merecumbe Soul Remix) (Merecumbe Recordings)
‘Titled Love’ just says it all as to what to expect whenever comin’ to have a listen to this piece of music. From its very first note, you can feel how its protagonists are dedicated to their art. Showcasing a rare delicacy in their arrangements, such as displayed of the original version of this gem. One could most likely feel a proximity with Joe Claussell in the approach. But also with Blaze (cf. ‘Found Love’) when flirting with Latin / Bossa vibes the way they do on ‘Titled Love’. Label head Doug Gomez pushin’ the vibe parts to the forefront on his stellar rework. Thus bringin’ it to slightly jazzier territories.

– Up and rising South African pair George Lesley and Stherable One are most likely names to bookmark. Blending live elements with digital music, they come up with a one of a kind approach destined to make them reach the upper heights.
Hailing from Sebokang in the Vaal, George Lesley is a multi-instrumentist. Not only a bassist, he started playing the keyboard at his church. This being where he gained his experience and perfected his art. After exposing the music industry to his amazing talent he went on to work alongside the likes of Bucie and Mi Casa among others. Looking to Robert Glasper and The Roots as his inspiration, Lesley is very keen on learning more about music and his own capabilities while making soulful and heart-warming music in the process with Those Boys.
Stherable One, originally from Ennerdale but now residing in Evaton West in the Vaal, is the DJ/producer who brings it all together. A music collector from a very young age, he learnt to make important sacrifices in his life very early. Eventually selling his computer in order to buy turntables to pursue his passion.
Remarkably, his first gig came while he was in Grade 8 when he was asked to DJ at his school’s matric farewell function. Since then he has played alongside the likes of Vinny Da Vinci, DJ Fresh, DJ Oskido, the late DJ Monde and Black Coffee to name a few. His musical inspiration coming from cats such as Louie Vega, Atjazz, Wunmi, Rasmus Faber, Osunlade and Abicah Soul.
Those Boys each met through mutual friends but somehow something brought these two individuals together musically. Their music will undoubtedly inspire and change the lives of those who dare to listen. They are not only talented but they are an example of how the passion of two individual artists can have one voice. A voice so brilliant that they don’t need to be anything other than… Those Boys!
“There’s lots more over there…” Lots more to expect from them. Such as on ‘Lots More’ which we welcomed as our Single Of The Week by the end of 2016. But also ‘Aztec Soul’ earlier on that year. And, more recently the soothing ‘Proud And Free’. Not to mention ‘Titled Love’ on Doug Gomez‘s Merecumbe Recordings label.
– Hailing from the Big Apple, Doug Gomez started his career back in 1987. As a true New Yorker of Latin decent, his love for drums and sophisticated melodies led him to be embrace the path of DJing and production. He notoriously worked for Waako Records from 1994 to 2005 as A&R/promotions director. A label that had artists such as K.O.T., Lenny Fontana, Kenny Carpenter, Mood II Swing and Louie ‘Balo’ Guzman to name a few.
In 2007, he teamed up with a friend to create music together under the alias DRRTYHAZE. A venture which got them signed to labels like Gomma, TIRK, and Nang amongst others.
7 years later, in 2014, the calling to move to Costa Rica where he now resides came as an evidence for his creative growth. Doug Gomez is now slowly but surely spreading his sound in the region as well as the world.
Running his own label – Merecumbe Recordings – we welcomed him since on a regular base on this shores. With stellar gems such as ‘Meta Morpho Sis’ and ‘Coros en la Calle’ featuring Toto Berriel. But also ‘Tribes Of The Jaguar’. Not to mention his remix of N’Dinga Gaba, Jaidene Veda feat. Josh Milan‘s ‘Beautiful’. And, more recently, his rework of Those Boys‘ ‘Titled Love’. This in addition to his collab with South African singer Unqle Chriz on the soothing ‘My Everything’.
The final part of 2018 seeing him delivering a stellar reconstruction of Coflo feat. Lady C‘s ‘Reasons’…
