“Rome wasn’t built in a day” (from the Latin “Romam uno die non fuisse conditam”). As many words sayin’ it all as to how he all need time to (hopefully) create great things. But comin’ up with the most comprehensive website is one thing. Meanwhile integrating it in our current environment and therefore makin’ it as handy as possible for you is a way different one. Tomorrow starts today!
When the idea of setting up a website came to my mind back in the early 2000’s, I was far from figuring where this would lead me to. Mind you, I was a journo working for various magazines in France, eventually running editorial teams. And this was pretty much about it. Then one day, during the Winter Conference in Miami, some correspondants of mine in America and Britain came at me. And what they did was suggesting me to provide them with an English version of my interviews and reviews. Something I couldn’t obviously do with any of the mags I was writing for. Meanwhile, a neighbour of mine who was a programmer came up with the solution. He said to me: “Tomorrow starts today!”, meanwhile givin’ birth to the first version of IDMW. With him responsible for the container and yours truly for the content…
I gotta say it remained like quite piece of cake for me at the time. But things would turn quite different when he relocated to another place, leavin’ me alone to deal with the baby and the bath water in the mid-2000’s. Besides the system we were using – php-nuke – had already shown its limits back then. Those of you havin’ a bit of knowledge should understand where I’m comin’ from. And after consulting a couple of website builders, I came to the point where I would have to use some open source system to keep on doin’ my thing. It was then my own turn to tell myself: “Tomorrow starts today!”
We were back then in 2007 and I pretty much started everything from scratch. And even though I had a certain idea as to what I wanted, putting it into shape was a way different story. I first had to have at least a basic understanding of the different languages the programmers are using. Then put them into practice to see how the whole was rendering. It took me about 2 years to have something I could feel good with. But I couldn’t see the end of the process as taken into unceasing updates. From the CMS I was using to the extensions I’d implemented. This getting me to put the whole on hold during the following years.
Back in the first half of 2014, a long time friend of mine by the likes of Gary Van den Bussche said to me I should get back to where I left with a new version of IDMW. No need sayin’ how I was quite sceptical at the perspective of starting the whole all over again. But I ended putting myself once again into that tomorrow starts now thing. Although choosing what I felt like being the safest solution while embarking on WordPress.com. But after two years, it was clear that it didn’t allow me to reach the next step because of too many limitations. Meaning that I had no other alternative for that but migrating the whole to a self-hosted platform. Eventually coming to face extra challenges…
Almost 18 months after, we still have updates to be done editorially speaking. With a bunch of old posts to meet the criteria in terms of Search Engine Optimization among others things. But we also wanted to make to make it more accessible for you. Beginning with the possibility for you to log in and comment while using your Facebook account profile upon request from our application. Meanwhile proceeding to little retouches in terms of design, architecture and navigation here or there with the will to make your life more easy. This most likely explaining why we’ve remained silent during these last weeks.
Here we go fully ready to welcome you on this new chapter in our evolution…
