Toots & The Maytals – Funky Kingston

This Beat Is Mine! (*) Toots & The Maytals – Funky Kingston (Dragon)

Funky Nassau pretty much left their name in History. This with the release of the seminal ‘The Beginning Of The End’ back in 1971. Then why would why speak about ‘Funky Kingston’?!?
I’ll never thank enough that fellow of mine who got me into that Toots & The Maytals‘s album of the likes a few years ago. Meanwhile opening my ears to a whole bunch of things I didn’t really know about the music of my ancestors.

Of course, one can’t deny its Reggae flavors in the rhythm part, from the drumming to the piano. But there is also this undeniably funky driven rhythm guitar in addition to a Jazzy sax part makin’ it quite apart from many other things around. Not to mention the incredible vocal performance by the likes of band leader Frederick “Toots” Hibbert.

‘Funky Kingston’ is definitely my favorite from this group along with ‘Louie Louie’ and ‘True Love Is Hard To Find’…

With warm thanks to Bristol-based correspondent, Lamont Johnson, for this week’s suggestion…

Gladly welcoming yours to be published next Wednesday. On your marks!
